Summer Recreation Art

Our summer recreation program is in full swing and are they having fun. From making walking sticks to a visit from the Fire Department to joining the Art Tour, these kids are busy and having a blast.

Last week, the Fire Department dropped by and let them explore the truck and taught them about fire safety.

They also made walking sticks to take on their hike to McLean's Park.

This week they were preparing for the Art Tour that is coming to the Museum this weekend and created some of their own stone art outside of the municipal office.  Be sure to drop by and take a look.

See that little lady bug peeking out?

There is no doubt we definitely have some budding artists in our midst!

Update On Our Current Events

Are you growing some vegetables amongst your flower gardens?  Many people in town have taken part in our Make Assiginack Edible event.

You only have to head to the library to see the big vegetable garden growing in front of the municipal building. Deb and Freda have done a great job, so much so, that one crop of produce has already been delivered to the food bank!

Have you checked out the barn quilt map? Next time you are out for a drive take a look at the map beforehand and jot down a few addresses so you can be sure to see the great artwork on your travels. It is amazing to see how much talent we have on our island. One gentleman has now made four of them and is experimenting making smaller ones for garden ornaments.

Another resident has drawn and painted the family crest onto her board.

Try and decide which one is your favourite!

A Great Time At Canada Day

Hats off to the Summer Recreation staff for putting on a super time at the beach on July 1st.  There was a pile of games for kids, prizes, food and lots of fun.

We also had a draw for our Pay It Forward campaign and 10 year old Drake won it.  Drake had done several acts of kindness including paid compliments to others, left tips for servers, held open doors and served others before himself.   Way to go Drake!

There were several other random acts of kindness throughout the two weeks that we heard about, many being from children.  They include:
- volunteering at a scout camp to help kids
- clean out desks at school
- helped parents load car to come to beach
- cleaned room
- shared toys with sister
- said nice things to people
- helped educate people
- assisted an elder person launch boat
- gave friend a toy when she had lost one
- gave a loonie to a person in a store
- held the door open
- gave a ride to someone in need
- organized a show at school
- cleaned bathroom
- watered grandma's flowers
-left money for the next person to pay for their order at local restaurant
- caught fish and gave them to someone in the community
- volunteered at the school for track and field

How wonderful random acts of kindness are for others!
Fantastic job residents.  Imagine if we made an effort to do one random act of kindness every single day?
